The Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full-time position of Lecturer or Instructor of Swahili with a start date of August 16, 2025. This is a full-time 9-month, non-tenure track, specialized faculty position which is renewable yearly contingent on availability of funding, strong performance reviews and healthy enrollments in classes. The budgeted salary for the position is $58,000 for Instructor and $60,000 for Lecturer.
The successful candidate will teach the equivalent of six courses per academic year. Duties include grading, holding office hours, attending meetings, planning and overseeing extra-curricular activities, organizing special events (such as languages days, film nights, conversation tables), and promoting the language program and the Sub-Saharan Languages minor through flyers and informational sessions, as applicable.
Required Qualifications
Candidates with a PhD in hand will be appointed as Lecturer. Candidates who are ABD or hold a Masters degree level will be appointed as Instructor. Professional level competence in both Swahili and English is required. Experience in language teaching and at least a Masters degree are required. A specialization in Swahili or experience with teaching Swahili as a foreign language, particularly at the university level, is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with evidence of successful teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, online teaching, and summer/intensive teaching experience will be given preference.
